Scrumptious Homemade Smokey Chipotle Barbecue Sauce
Homemade Chipotle Barbecue Sauce is absolutely delicious when served with your grilled hamburgers, ribs, brisket and even chicken. You will find this to be very similar to homemade “ketchup” and mighty addictive in taste.
You do remember “sauce” in Spanish is “Salsa” right. Let’s get to cookin’ some fantastic make your mouth glow “Smokey Chipotle Salsa Recipe”
Hey, did you know the chipotle chile is a mature red jalapeno which has been smoked and dried.
- 3 cups peeled, seeded and chopped tomatoes, with their juices
- 1 tablespoon salt 1 ½ teaspoons freshly ground pepper
- 2 tablespoons firmly packed brown sugar
- 2/3 cup apple cider vinegar
- ½ chipotle chile in adobo sauce plus ½ teaspoon of the adobo sauce*
- 4 teaspoons honey
- * You will find the Chipotles both dried and canned in adobo sauce, a red sauce containing ground chiles, vinegar, herbs and spices.
- Cook the tomatoes in a non reactive sauce pan over medium high heat. Stirring occasionally, until they are soft and the liquid has cooked down, about 20 minutes. Remove from heat.
- In another saucepan over medium-high heat, combine the salt, pepper, cinnamon, cloves, allspice, brown sugar and vinegar. Stir until the sugar dissolves. Add to the tomatoes, along with the chipotle chili and adobo sauce. Bring to a boil over high heat; reduce the heat to medium and simmer, stirring occasionally, until thickened, about 10 minutes.
- Transfer to a blender or food processor fitted with a metal blade and puree until smooth. Add the honey to taste, stirring well.
- Serve with your favorite grilled meats.

Capt’n Salsa’s Tip about Chipotle Chiles.
Freeze the any left over chipotles by placing individual chiles on a cookie sheet, devide the remaining adobo sauce equally among the chiles. This will look like “chipotle cookies” then place the entire cookie sheet in the freezer. Place the frozen chiles in a freezer bag and use as needed. These will keep for at least a year in the freezer.
